My family and myself

Shirley left ASU as a leading expert in the structure of Mn oxides, a most difficult and complex group of minerals. Her years at the Chemical Science and Technology Laboratory, National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST; formerly the National Bureau of Standards) have brought her to the forefront in the study of asbestos, for which I understand she developed some of the current analytical standards and helps conduct proficiency testing of TEM laboratories around the country. Shirley and her husband Andy adopted Andrew (8) and Linda (5) from Russia four and two years ago – “and haven’t had a dull moment since.”
